Good anecdote. Interesting thoughts too. Come over and visit me at www.themechanicsofhappiness.com and see if there is more grist for your mill or food for your soul there.

So happiness depends on how others treat us? Yes - to some extent but if we are over reliant on others for generating our happiness when they die, move on or leave we crumble. Perhaps it would be truer to say that positive experiences and relationships with other can help each of us build our own sense of happiness by helping us to become the best person we can. We are then in a position to generate our own happiness from within without depending on others. This means we can be alone and be happy as well as be wih others and experience happiness too. We can even be with difficult peole and be happy. Which I guess brings us back to Winnicot's point that we should aim to be to be alone in the company of others - no matter who they are.
I think also happiness is not a state of high excitment as is so often portrayed by the media. It arises from a state of deep peace and contentment.
